Man(atee) The Water's Warm, Debby Named.

I have always wanted to snorkel with manatees in Florida, and maybe this year will be the year. And right now it's possible to combine a manatee dip with a trip to New England! Apparently someone from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management spotted a healthy manatee swimming off Greenwich Bay. And they are not sure if this is the same manatee that was spotted earlier in August swimming near Manhattan, NY. But waters well up the northeast coast are certainly super warm:

  • Newport, RI 69.8
  • Lewes, Delaware 73.9
  • Cape Charles, VA 81.0
  • Solomons, MD 82.6
  • New London, CT 69.6

These water temperatures and the overall pattern is fueling concerns that a tropical system strikes somewhere in the northeast this year. It probably won't be "Debby" though. As of 11 pm we have our 4th named system of this season. And Little "Debby" is expected to remain below hurricane strength through Saturday night. The storm is still expected to stay east of Bermuda, so she may end up being a "fish" storm and not bother any people or coastal cruising manatees.
