Hurricane Outlook, Sailing Towards Scattered Storms
Today's picture is from the main channel of the Tennessee River, as a sailboat heads upstream on the port side. Mighty nautical of me, eh matey? I've actually had my hand on the tiller once....and no it wasn't a roto-tiller. Once upon a time Lake Lanier used to have little one man sailboats that you could rent. (Maybe they still do.) I hopped in one and with an offshore breeze I was quickly picking up speed and out into the middle of the lake. I was stuck for awhile until figured tacking out. And after that it was off to the races. For a long time I had the bug for a sailboat, and someday I wouldn't mind renting a small one again. Until then this knot-head will stick to cruising below the waves with a tank on my back from time to time.
Yesterday the folks at the National Hurricane Center updated their forecast for the remainder of the season. They have trimmed the numbers back by one across the board. The graphic above shows what they're forecasting now, along with the update from Colorado State University and the comparison to average and last year. So far with only three named storms and no hurricanes, this season has been pretty ho-hum. But the peak of the Atlantic season is ahead, and it's possible that the basin roars to life in the next 6 to 8 weeks. So we'll watch the tropics knowing the threat level is still high, but hopeful this turns out to be a very minor landfall season.
Things looking wetter for us the next few days. I mowed the front yard yesterday which featured thick grass in the open areas, and I blew dust and leaves all over the place under the trees. It's still very dry out there, but rainfall picks up Thursday through Saturday across the area.
Today: Partly cloudy, 30% chance for scattered storms. High: 94
Tonight: Storms fade. Low: 74
Thursday and Friday: Scattered storms with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s.
Saturday: Partly cloudy 40% chance for scattered storms. High: 88
Sunday: Partly cloudy with a slight chance for an isolated storm mainly south of Chattanoonga. High: 88
